Get over your fears of the “green” smoothie!  I’m not going to waste my fruit or time on something that tastes like slime!  Getting your nutrients in one shot is THE way to start your day.  If you suffer from chronic fatigue, just think: your body has less to digest, thereby wasting less energy.  And the instant absorption gives your body the surge it needs.  A sweet, creamy greeny:

1 c. kale (washed and stems removed)

2 kiwis

2 frozen bananas

1 c. almond milk

1/2 c. apple juice

sprinkling of chia seeds

1 tsp. spirulina (optional, add for superfood benefits)

Serves: 2 small thick smoothies

  1. What are chia seeds and how expensive is spirulina? I was just reading about spirulina last week and a man who ran a marathon at close to age 100 because of a quick smoothie he drinks everyday using spirulina! Pretty amazing spirulina seems to be a major contributing factor to energyyyyyy!

    1. Chia seeds have been used by the Aztecs and Mayans for thousands of years. It is actually the Mayan word for “strength.” When I think chia, I think: Omega-3s and fiber! From Dr. Oz’s site, “Chia delivers 42% of your recommended daily value of fiber in a single serving.” Also from Dr. Oz, “ounce for ounce, chia seeds have more omega-3 fatty acids than salmon!” They are a simple way to add omegas, fiber, calcium among other nutrients without grinding up anything of that sort. Just scoop out a teaspoon and add to your mix. Having no flavor is another plus! I pick up mine from the health food store in weighed containers. Most packaging seems a bit expensive, though. Spirulina! Also considered a “superfood” is PROTEIN dense! It’s best to try to get 20 grams of protein in the morning to balance your blood sugar levels. This green addition to your smoothie is a close link with other sea vegetables; think kelp, dulse, etc. Spirulina actually contains all of the amino acids! Amazing! As well as a list of major minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids. There have been a lot of remarkable studies linking spirulina with aging brain health. Your body will only be as healthy as your mind! Again, a pricier addition to our smoothies. I bought a bulk bag, keep it in my fridge, spoon some in smoothies here and there and I’ve never felt the pinch in my pocket. As Benny Franklin had said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!”
